COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK LEVEL GUIDE:

At A1 level, a learner can:
• Understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at meeting specific needs.
• Introduce themselves and others, and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know, and things they have.
• Interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

At A2 level, a learner can:
• Understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g., basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).
• Communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.
• Describe in simple terms aspects of their background, immediate environment, and matters in areas of immediate need.

Often seen as a bridge between A2 (elementary) and B1 (intermediate). At A2+ level, a learner can:
• Understand and communicate with greater ease in everyday situations, handling more complex phrases and expressions than at A2.
• Engage in conversations on familiar topics more confidently, providing and obtaining relevant information.
• Describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes, and ambitions briefly.
• Deal with simple, straightforward communication in social and travel contexts, and handle short social exchanges with some effort.

At B1 level, a learner can:
• Understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
• Deal with most situations likely to arise while traveling in an area where the language is spoken.
• Produce simple connected text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest.
• Describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes, and ambitions, and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Often seen as a bridge between B1 (intermediate) and B2 (upper-intermediate). At B1+ level, a learner can:
• Understand and engage in more complex conversations on familiar topics with greater confidence and fluency than at B1.
• Cope with a wider range of situations that may arise while traveling in areas where the language is spoken.
• Produce more detailed and coherent text on familiar topics and areas of interest.
• Describe experiences, events, dreams, hopes, and ambitions more clearly, and provide more elaborate reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

At B2 level, a learner can:
• Understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in their field of specialization.
• Interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.
• Produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue, giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

At C1 level, a learner can:
• Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning.
• Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions.
• Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic, and professional purposes.
• Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors, and cohesive devices.
